The Trump Administration to Provide 50% Food Stamp Benefits in November

The federal administration revealed it would offer limited relief to numerous food stamp recipients as the ongoing federal closure approached a historic duration.

Benefit Decrease Information

Amid mounting concern for the around 42 million people registered in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Department of Agriculture declared it would employ contingency money to continue payments, although at just 50% of the usual level participants normally receive.

Money for the assistance formally expired on the weekend due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th consecutive day with little indication of completion.

Judicial Developments

The announcement came in a court filing after prior refusals to issue emergency funding on claimed legal grounds. A federal judge had decided the leadership could not deny program funds due to the shutdown.

Subsequent to the legal directive, the administration announced it would be "pleased" to supply emergency funding for the program.

Implementation Hurdles

Officials indicated that benefits could begin distribution by midweek, but stressed the need for more clarification from the courts on how to lawfully redirect money for SNAP assistance.

  • Several states have indicated it will take time or even extended time to provide assistance to low-income families.
  • Crowds have been observed at charities around the nation.
  • In multiple locations, stadium parking lots were converted into distribution sites.

State Emergency Responses

Various local governments, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced crisis measures to allocate short-term funds for assistance. However, these amounts were anticipated to be a small portion of the typical federal funding.

The national costs for SNAP total approximately $8 billion each month throughout the United States.
