"When are you chatting with Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a close trio. Their videos repeatedly depict them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"So all are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent confidence demanded a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global following.

However the sister act will always be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
