European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
