A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
